- Define Geography
- Identify ways that Geographers are using to find locations on Earth
3
1. Definition
Geography is the study of Physical and Human features of Earth, our home planet.
Geographers are always trying to answer two basic questions in Geography:
1. Where are things located?
2. Why are they there?
4
1. Directions
Geographers use Human inventions to discuss where things are located on Earth. One of those inventions in the concept of directions. Geographers are using:
1. Cardinal directions: N, E, S, W
2. Intermediate directions: NE, SE, NW, SW
5
2. The Global Grid
Latitude and Longitude form a global grid to that can be used to precisely locate places on Earth.
6
Latitude
Is the position North or South of the Equator? It is measured in degrees.
Lines of latitude are divided into 180 degrees, 90 degrees South of the Equator, and 90 degrees North of it.
Lines of latitude form east-west circles around the globe. Lines of latitude are also called parallels because they are parallel to one another.
The Equator is dividing Earth into two Hemispheres: Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere.
7
8
Longitude
These are vertical imaginary lines connecting the North and South pole. They are half-circles. The first longitude line is the Prime Meridian which passes through Greenwich - England.
The Prime meridian is dividing Earth into Western Hemisphere and Eastern Hemisphere. Other lines, west or East from the Prime meridian are called Meridians.
There are 360 degrees of longitude which are divided into 0-180 degrees East and 0-180 degrees West.
