  • a word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence

​PAST TENSE

- used to describe things that have already happened

​RULE:

​- The past tense is formed by adding -d or -ed to the base form of the verb.

​EXAMPLE:

​- All the milk (flow) ________ out of the milkmaid's pail.

PRESENT TENSE

- used to describe things that are happening right now, or things that are continuous

​RULE:

​- The present tense is formed by using is, am, or the base form of the verb. Generally, s or es is added to the base form when the subject of the sentence is singular but not when the subject is plural.

- used to describe things that are happening right now, or things that are continuous

​EXAMPLES:

​- I feel great! Pauline (love) ______ pie. I’m sorry to hear that you’re sick.

PRESENT AND PAST (for be verbs)

​EXAMPLES:

My dog (be) is sick. (present tense)

My dog (be) was sick last night. (past tense)

FUTURE TENSE

- used to describe actions that will happen in the future

​RULE:

​- The simple future tense is formed by using shall or will with the base form of the verb.

​EXAMPLE:
