Week 3 Lesson 1
The Fall of the Roman Empire
2
Cause and Effect
When we talk about cause and effect, we are speaking about something happening - a cause - and then looking at what happens because of the cause - the effect.
It can be thought of also as there being a consequence for something that happens.
On the next few slides are some every-day examples. See how you go answering them.

Cause and Effect in the Roman Empire
Remember back to last lesson.
The Romans spread over most of Europe and took over the countries. They forced people to act like the Italians and speak their language. They made the poor people pay a lot of taxes and they also did not let them have a vote.
8
Open Ended
If the cause is that the Romans came to a country and then just took over control, what do you think the effect might be?
Write WHY you think of that effect.
9
Cause and Effect
We can also look at cause and effect from the other way. In other words, we see the effect that something has and we try and think of the cause.
For example, the teacher told the student off for not having charge on her iPad. This is the effect.
The cause could be that she forgot to charge it the night before.
10
Multiple Choice
The EFFECT was that the teacher was late to class. What was the cause?
She was wearing a hat to school
She forgot to look at her watch
The nurse was with another teacher
11
Multiple Choice
The EFFECT was that the country closed its borders to international travelers
Cause: It take 6 hours to fly to that country
Cause: It may rain in the next week
Cause: There was an outbreak of covid
12
Open Ended
Here is a cause:
The Romans ordered others to speak Italian when they took over control of their country.
What is the effect? (How did people feel or behave, do you think?)
Give a reason WHY.
13
The Goths
Remember this from last lesson:
Around 376CE the Goths came from the southeast to the edge of the River Danube. Some Gothic tribes fought against the Roman Empire. Some joined the Romans and fought with them.
14
The Goths
These tensions inside and outside the Empire grew. The Goths declared war against the Romans and won several large battles. In the Battle of Hadrianopolis, in 378CE the Roman emperor, Valens, was killed. In 410CE, the Goths stormed the city of Rome and carried away a great deal of the city's wealth.
15
Open Ended
If the EFFECT was that the Goths declared war on the Romans, what was the CAUSE?
Give a reason for your answer.
16
Attila the Hun
Remember that at the same time that the Goths were fighting, there was another fierce group of people called the Huns who attacked the edges of the empire. The Huns were horsemen who had bigger bows and arrows than the Romans.
17
Attila the Hun
Within a decade, the Huns, led by Attila, conquered the eastern territories of the Roman Empire, establishing a kingdom where Hungary, Slovakia and Romania are today. The Hun dominance started to decline when Attila died in 453CE.
18
Open Ended
Cause: Attila the Hun died in 453CE
What is the effect?
Give a reason why.
19
Open Ended
One of the events that helped create the Pax Romana was that Emperor Augustus united all the major military leaders. How do you think that this event helped keep the Roman Empire peaceful?
20
Open Ended
Emperor Augustus also convinced the Roman people that peace will lead to wealth.
How do you think that this idea helped keep the Roman Empire peaceful and the people happy?
21
Open Ended
If the Romans also increased trade (swapping or buying and selling things) with the countries in the east, what EFFECT do you think that this had? What would the Romans get?
22
Well done on completing the Quizziz.
Now that you have finished, head over to Schoology where you will find a word search with all our key words from this topic.
You can edit this on your iPad to highlight the words as you find them.
Don't worry if you don't finish this in class. You can keep it in your files to work on maybe in next lesson!
