Structure

​Conditionals are sentences in English that are made of TWO parts:

​A condition (starting with IF)

​A result​

​

​IF YOU DON'T COME INSIDE, YOU WILL GET WET

​Types of conditionals

​There are 4 conditional structures. We will look at 3 of them.

Zero conditional​

​We can use WHEN instead of IF

​FIRST CONDITIONAL

​We are talking about the future, a possible future. We are thinking about a particular situation or condition and there is a real possibility it will happen.

You can also use UNLESS which means "only if not"

​Difference between 0 and 1st conditionals

​(Zero Conditional) If you sit in the sun, you get burned.

​This sentence means that this happens EVERY TIME a person sits in the sun - the burning is a natural consequence of sitting.

​​(First Conditional) If you sit in the sun, you will get burned.

​

​This sentence means that this will happen today, another day might be different.
