Finding Density
To find the density of a material, measure both mass & volume
Remember the formula:
**Remember:
**mass is measured in grams or kilograms
**volume is measured in cubic centimeters, milliliters or liters
4
Poll
To find density of a material, you must measure ...
grams
volume
liters
mass
gravity
5
To find density of a liquid- use graduated cylinder and a balance
find the mass of the graduated cylinder. Record the measurement
Pour the liquid into graduated cylinder. Write down volume of liquid.
Place the graduated cylinder with the liquid on the balance. Record the mass.
Find the mass of the liquid by subtracting the mass of the empty cylinder from the mass of the graduated cylinder with liquid.
6
Density of a liquid
density = mass volume
density = 10g 10mL
density = 1 g/mL

Density of a solid
You can find density if you know its volume and its mass.
Use a balance to find the mass
(for a rectangular solid) You can find volume by
multiplying: length x width x height
mass = 270 grams
volume = 100 cm3
