The origins of the Treble Clef

Before written music was standardized, many musicians used a G to specify the notes of the treble clef (Also known as the G clef)

It went through quite a few editions before it became the symbol we are familiar with today.

3

Why use the treble clef?

The treble clef is used to represent high sounds in music.

On the piano, it represents the notes on the right of middle 'c'.

It also represents notes played on high instruments such as the flute, the violin, the piccolo and the ukulele.

The Pitches on the Treble Staff

If you recall, the staff is made up of 5 lines and 4 spaces.

media

The Treble Staff is so named because the inner swirl of the treble clef curls around the line where the note 'G' lives.

5

Using the line 'G' as our focal point, we can then determine where the other pitches are located on the treble staff.

6

Therefore, the pitches on our treble staff are:

If we look solely at the notes on the lines, we get:

E G B D F.

We can use the acronym:

Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge

to help us remember those notes!

For notes on the spaces, we have F A C E.

We can just say: Space spells FACE!

LET'S TRY A FEW SAMPLE QUESTIONS TO HELP US REMEMBER OUR PITCHES! :)
