​Complex Punctuation Definitions

Parenthesis:

Used to separate extra information from the actual sentence. This can be brackets, commas or dashes either side of the info.

Colons:

Colons can be used to start a list or instead of =. Semi colons are used to separate list items or to replace conjunctions.

​Spelling Questions 1-3

​1. Prefixes and Suffixes

​These are groups of words added to the beginning or end of a word to change its meaning. E.g. pre in precaution and ing in laughing

​2. Missing letters and incorrect spelling

​The question may give you the wrong spelling and ask you to correct it. E.g. mishtace instead of mistake

​3. Silent letters

​These are letters in a word that aren't pronounced when reading it aloud. E.g. kitchen or autumn

​4. Root words

​These are words without any prefixes or suffixes added, without changes. E.g. change instead of changing/changes

​5. Compound words

​These words are two words put together. E.g. cupboard (cup and board)

​6. Alphabetical order

​This is an order using the alphabet. The word closest to the start comes first. E.g. apple, banana, mango, orange

​7. Words sums

​This is using a plus sign to indicate an equation. You place the letters after the first. E.g. teach + er = teacher

​8. Singular and plural

​Singular means one thing, like one person. Plural means more than one thing, like multiple people. E.g. Change 'chief' to plural? Chiefs.

​Nouns & Describing Words

​A common noun is a object, place or person, e.g. book

​A proper noun is a noun which needs a capital letter, e.g. Queen

​A collective noun is a synonym for a group, e.g. herd

​An abstract noun is a noun which you can't see, e.g. emotion

​A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun, e.g. it

​An adjective is a word that describes a noun, e.g. pretty

​An adverb is a word that describes a verb, e.g. slowly

​A modal verb is a word specifying the likelihood, e.g. might
