Declarative/non-procedural programs say what needs to be done but not how. 

Computation is performed by an interpreter that must decide how to perform the computation.

Logic programming is a form of declarative programming. Logic programs consist of statements of logic that say what is true of some domain. 

Computation is deduction; answers to queries are obtained by deducing the logical consequences of the logic program, thus, the interpreter is an inference engine. 

Programs can also contain information that helps guide the interpreter.
