States of Matter

  • Solid

    • Definite shape

    • Definite volume

  • Liquid

    • Take the shape of its container

    • Definite volume

  • Gas

    • Take the shape of its container

    • Non-Definite volume

Magnetic or No magnetic

  • If a material sticks to a magnet, we say it is magnetic.

  • Some metals such as IRON, STEEL, COBALT, and NICKEL are magnetic.

  • NOT all metals are magnetic.

  • In a magnet same poles repel, different poles attract.

  • We can determine which magnet is stronger by counting how many clips each one can hold.

4

Density

Density is the amount of mass an object has in an unit of volume. (how much matter it has in a determined space).

In the picture, we can say that honey is THE MOST DENSE of all the liquids and vegetable oil is THE LEAST DENSE of all the liquids.

5

RELATIVE DENSITY

Relative Density is the density of an object related with water.

The density of water is 1 g/mm3

It means that if we put water in a cube of 1 mm, its mass is 1 gram.

If an object SINKS in water, we say it is MORE DENSE than water.

If an object FLOATS in water, we say it is LESS DENSE than water.

6

Conductor or

Insulator

  • CONDUCTOR is the material that allows the path of electricity or heat.

  • INSULATOR is the material that stops or slows the path of electricity or heat.

7

Mixture

  • A mixture is when 2 or more substances are combined and they keep their physical properties and they can be separated by physical methods. Ex: a vegetable salad, a mixture of different beans.

media

8

Solution

  • A solution is a mixture that each substance is evenly mixed throughout.

  • A solution is forming a new component.

  • We say that a material is soluble if it can be dissolved in a specific liquid. Ex, we say that salt or sugar are soluble in water because they form a solution - Salty water or Sweet water.

  • We can SEPARATE this solution by evaporation.
