Interests of The North

  • ECONOMIC : INDUSTRY - manufacturing goods in factories

  • PRO-TARIFFS : Taxes on imports would encourage US consumers to purchase goods from the US instead of buying goods from Great Britain.

  • Anti-Slavery : The North did not rely on agriculture or a plantation system, so there was a movement against slavery.

  • States Rights : The Union was more concerned with following Federal Laws and mandates instead of wanting to make more decisions as individual states.

8

Interests of The South

  • ECONOMIC : Agriculture - the South relied on the plantation system to grow large cash crops (cotton)

  • ANTI-TARIFFS : Taxes on imports would create extra expenses for the South as they had established trade relationships with Great Britain and imported many goods.

  • Pro-Slavery : The plantation system relied on SLAVERY, so the South did not believe they could function without the institution.

  • States Rights : The South was angry about the Federal laws being made at the time and wanted to have more freedom to overturn and/or make their own laws.
