Sides of the War and the MAIN CAUSE
The North was called the Union and the Union Soldiers were given the nickname, “Yankees”
The South was called The Confederacy and the Confederate Soldiers were given the nickname, “Rebels”
Sectionalism is what divided the United States into NORTH and SOUTH or into sections. (PLACING THE INTERESTS OF YOUR STATE/REGION over the GooD/INTERESTS of YOUR NATION/COUNTRY)

ECONOMIC : INDUSTRY - manufacturing goods in factories
PRO-TARIFFS : Taxes on imports would encourage US consumers to purchase goods from the US instead of buying goods from Great Britain.
Anti-Slavery : The North did not rely on agriculture or a plantation system, so there was a movement against slavery.
States Rights : The Union was more concerned with following Federal Laws and mandates instead of wanting to make more decisions as individual states.

ECONOMIC : Agriculture - the South relied on the plantation system to grow large cash crops (cotton)
ANTI-TARIFFS : Taxes on imports would create extra expenses for the South as they had established trade relationships with Great Britain and imported many goods.
Pro-Slavery : The plantation system relied on SLAVERY, so the South did not believe they could function without the institution.
States Rights : The South was angry about the Federal laws being made at the time and wanted to have more freedom to overturn and/or make their own laws.

6. Sharecropper - a farmer who works land that belongs to someone else. In exchange they were paid with a portion of the crops they harvested.
7. Confederacy - A type of government in which many states form a country, but the states have more power to rule that the group as a whole.
8. popular sovereignty - the people rule and exercise power through their voting power
9. Federalism - A government that is organized into different levels. Each level has different responsibilities
10. Reconstruction - Rebuilding after the war. The union had to put itself back together.
