Number systems

In pre-historic times developed number systems mainly for the purpose of trading and agriculture.

*A number system is a writing symbol for expressing numbers using symbols in a consistent manner.

*Ancient civilizations used sticks, clay, stones, and even animal bones to record numbers.

*Numbers form the basis of mathematics and are used in our day to day life to count , order , measure , and label.

A positional or place value number system is one in which the position of a symbol in a number determines its value.

In most ancient number systems, position didn't matter. In fact, a symbol would be repeatedly drawn to represent larger numbers. For example in roman numeration the number 35 with X represented ten and V represented 5 so 35 would be XXXV

In ancient time larger numbers were too cumbersome to write

basic operations such as mathematics were too difficult to model

This concludes our lesson, in the next math study session we'll look at the modern number system and study how various numbers are classified
