Solving Word Problems

2

Tomorrow, you have your first test.

To prepare, we will look at how you can solve word problems. Make sure to read each problem carefully. Then, make a plan to solve.

3

Example:

Mr. Tyler had $40 to buy shoes for his children. He bought 2 pair of shoes for his daughter that were $5.60 each. Then, he bought three pairs of shoes for his son that were $4.65 each. How much money did Mr. Tyler have left after his purchases?

Start with the question to idenitfy the needed operation(s).

How much money did Mr. Tyler have left after his purchases?

This means you will SUBTRACT the cost of shoes from the amount Mr. Tyler started with.

2 pairs for 5.60 each = 11.20

3 pairs for 4.65 each = 13.95

11.20 + 13.95 = 25.15

40-25.15 = 14.85 remaning
