After the Louisiana Purchase was made, many settlers began to moving to Arkansas on the Southwest Trail.

The trail started in Missouri, passed through Arkansas, and ended up in Texas.

Many settlers also found their way into Arkansas by river.

The War of 1812 was a war fought between the Americans and the British.

As a result of this war, the White House was burned down.

The most important battle of this war was fought at New Orleans

Future President Andrew Jackson led the American force at the Battle of New Orleans

After the War of 1812, the land now known as Arkansas (then part of the Missouri Territory) was split up into Townships

Townships were plots of land that were divided into sixty 6 square mile sections and then divided further into 40 acre plots.

As a reward for veterans of the War of 1812, the government gave this land away.

However, a massive earthquake along the New Madrid Fault destroyed much of the land before veterans could even arrive.

One veteran, Benjamin Crowley, exchanged his destroyed land for land on top of a narrow ridge.

This settlement of Arkansas played a role in forcing Native Americans out of Arkansas.

The Osage, Quapaw, and others were forced into territory in present-day Oklahoma due to treaties and agreements signed with the US government.

As the Missouri territory pushed to become a state, they excluded five counties, which would become the Arkansas territory

Because of a desire to keep the balance of free and slave states, the Missouri Compromise was agreed to in 1820.

This compromise established that no more slave states could be established (except Missouri) North of the Arkansas territory border.
