Text Evidence

Whenever you make an analysis of a text, you must identify textual evidence to support your point. Textual evidence for poetry can include:

  • The title and subject of a poem. Sometimes the subject is stated directly, and other times readers must infer the subject.

  • A poem’s structure, including lines, stanzas, rhyme scheme, and meter. A stanza is part of a poem that is divided into sections. A rhyme scheme is the pattern of rhyming words, when a poem uses rhyme. Meter refers to the number of syllables in each line, but not all poems have a regular meter.

  • Figurative language, such as similes and metaphors.

  • Concepts or ideas outlined in a poem.

  • Details of setting, character, or events, if they apply.

  • Descriptive language, sensory details, imagery, and other strong word choices.
