​The simple past (also called past simple) is a verb tense which is used to show that a completed action took place at a specific time in the past. The simple past is also frequently used to talk about past habits and generalizations.

Forms: Subject + verb 2 (verb + ed)

Regular verbs are usually added an –ed ending after the root verb for the past tense, whereas irregular verbs do not follow this general rule. Next are some examples of regular and irregular verbs:

When we use past tense, we do not use ‘am, is, are’ again. We use was/were.
