Punctuation: comma

  • Use commas between items in a series; however, the comma before and or or is optional. Ex: He bought a pen, a notebook, an eraser (,) and a card.

  • Use comma to separate words or expressions that are put in uncommon places in a sentence, interrupting the normal flow. Ex: Paul didn't even give her a birthday card. He is, without a doubt, the most uncaring boy in the group.

  • Use comma before and after a vocative. Ex: Did you hear, Lucy, what he just said?

11

Punctuation: comma

  • We usually use commas before and, but, or so when they connect clauses. If the clauses are short, commas are not essential. Ex: Lucy is very mature for her age, but her cousin John is very naive. Leo is mature but Ana is naive.

  • Use a comma after clauses with (when, although, if, after, because, etc) when these clauses begin a sentence. Ex: If I hadn't studied for the test, I wouldn't have passed the exam.

12

Verb + object + infinitive

We use this structure in sentences where someone says or does something to influence someone else.
