​Using Informational Text Activity:

​Article of the Week: Student Choice Edition

We all know that reading is important, and yet it’s easy to put nonfiction aside when we don't have enough time.

Therefore, we are going to take turns identifying, reading, and sharing important news or non-fiction to the rest of the class, building a more informed group of citizens over time!

Instead of having a teacher pick and assign an article FOR you, you’ll get the opportunity to choose a non-fiction text and tell US about it.

​Step 1: Choose Your Article/Text

First, choose the article that you want to use for this assignment. (This step WILL require some browsing, reading, and actual thought!)

CHECKLIST: Choose one that…

Is school appropriate. (If you’re not sure, show it to me first!)

Is appropriate for your grade, age, and reading level (easy/medium/difficult).

 Is actually interesting to you, whether it’s a topic that is NEW and fascinating to you, or one that you are already passionate about.

 Is from a credible source, such as a legitimate news organization, journal, database, or magazine. (Newsela is your best source for appropriate articles)

Step 2: Print or Save the Text Correctly

Next, copy and paste the article’s TEXT, including the headline and byline (the part with the author, date, etc.) into a blank Word document. (Do NOT include any ads, irrelevant hyperlinks, or off-topic content! Your article MUST use a normal 11 or 12-sized font (like Calibri or Times New Roman or Arial). Do NOT include pictures!

​Step 3: Annotate it

Next, PRINT your article and annotate it, using a combination of markings and notes. Your goal is to add annotations that are:

 -Consistent: don’t skip paragraphs; annotate “evenly” and frequently across the ENTIRE article.

- Clean: legible, not messy, and with straight lines/ clear symbols where needed (see below).

 -Clear: an obvious system is being used. (See below)
