​Punctuation marks are symbols used to create and support meaning within a sentence or to break it up.

Uses of the Full Stop

  • To signify the end of a declarative sentence that has a complete thought.

  • To indicate the end of abbreviations.

(declarative sentence is a sentence that makes a statement, provides a fact, offers an explanation, or conveys information

  • Jane and John left for school.

  • The sentence you're reading right now is a declarative sentence.

  • I used to live on St. Lucia two years ago.

Use of the Comma

To address someone directly

  • Separate individual elements from each other

  • To separate clauses joined by a conjunction

  • Happy birthday, John!

  • I’m going to buy chocolates, soap, and water.

  • I was heading home, but then I remembered I left my books at school.

Use Question Mark

To indicate the end of an interrogative sentence (Interrogative sentences are sentences that ask a question)

  • What school do you attend?

  • Where is your classmate?

Exclamation Point (!)

Use Exclamation Point:

  • To signify the end of an exclamatory sentence

  • To express strong emphasis

  • I am so excited you are finally here!

  • I told you to go down so many times!

Apostrophe (‘)

Use apostrophe:

  • To indicate omission of a letter

  • To indicate possession/ownership

  • Plural cases of numbers & letters

  • I’m going out to eat.

  • My sister’s bag is very pretty.

  • The Q&A’s time was extended.

Use Quotation marks:

  • To mark the beginning and end of quoted statements.

  • “I’ll meet you at the gate in 20 minutes,” mom said.

  • She shouted, “Stop! Stop! Don’t leave me!”

  • The study asked, “Miss, what are we doing today?”

REMEMBER:

​Statements end with a period. (.)

​Questions end with a question mark. (?)

​Exclamations end with an exclamation marl (!)

​Quotations marks highlight what a person said (" ")
