Coordinating conjunctions

Conjunctions are joining words that link together parts of a sentence and show a relationship between ideas. The most common coordinating conjunctions are ‘and’, ‘but’, ‘or’, ’so’

  • ​and : the same, similar or equal; connect words, phrases, or clauses (addition)

  • ​but : for contrast

  • ​or : alternative; choice

  • ​so : for showing the consequence of something; result/reason

​Note: In writing, we use a comma before a coordinating conjunction.

It is always a good idea to justify your opinions. Don’t just say ‘I agree’, but say ‘I agree because I think that ... (explain your reason).’
