​What is a biography?

 A biography is an account of someone’s life written by another person.

​Purpose of Biography

​

• The purpose of biography is to tell the story of a person’s life.

​Structures of Biography

ØTitle

ØIntroduction – opens with an attention grabbing paragraph that summarizes the main events of the person’s life to make the reader want to read on

ØHeadings – used to organize the text

ØInclude early life, family, personality, education and relevant achievements – each section written in paragraphs

Ø Quotation – from the person or important people in their life

ØConclusion – what they are doing now or how they will be remembered

​Ø Tense - written in past tense

Ø Events are written in chronological order

ØThird person (Written in the third person) – he, she, they, himself, it, their, them, etc

ØDates and specific FACTS

Ø Use adverbs and adverbial phrases – when, where or how the action   takes place

Ø Use time connectives to link sentences and paragraphs – then, after that, firstly, before that, etc.

​Let's read the biography of Yuri Gagarin

​Yuri Gagarin

​Childhood

​Yuri Gagarin was born in Klushino, a small village west of Moscow, the third of four children. Growing up during World War II, life was difficult. His father worked as a carpenter and his mother worked as milkmaid

​Training for the future

​In school, Yuri was good at mathematics and physics. After school, he discovered a love of flying and joined the Soviet Air Force. He enjoyed being a fighter pilot, but he really wanted to go space.

​First cosmonaut 

​In 1960, he was one of the 20 applicants chosen to be the Soviet Union's first cosmonaut. Gagarin remained calm under the pressure of the intense training and excelled at the tasks, while also keeping his sense of humour. 

​Later, he was chosen to be the first man into space because of these skills. It also helped that he was short and could fit into a small space capsule!

​Lift off 

​On 12th April 1961, at 09:07 a.m. Vostok 1 was launched. Just after lift-off, Gagarin is said to have called out, Poyekhali! ('Off we go!'). He was rocked into space and completed a single orbit around the Earth. 

​Mission accomplished

​At the end of the orbit, Vostok 1 re-entered the Earth's atmosphere. Gagarin ejected (as planned) from the spacecraft and used a parachute to land safely - just 108 minutes after blast off. Yuri Gagarin became both the person to enter space and first person orbit the Earth.
