The Supreme Court has a very important role atop the judicial branch of the U.S. government. As the highest court in the land, the Court is tasked with interpreting the Constitution and applying federal law in order to protect the rights of the American people. In fulfilling this role, the Supreme Court justices do the following:

  • Exercise the power of judicial review to ensure the other branches act according to the Constitution

  • Select important cases to hear, which are typically appealed from lower-court rulings

  • Follow a clear procedure of hearing appeals, voting, and issuing rulings

  • Deliver majority, concurring, and dissenting opinions that publicly explain their rulings

  • Apply the philosophies of judicial restraint or judicial activism to their rulings
