FRACTIONS
by Aarna Gupta
HELLO EVERYONE! IN TODAYS'S LECTURE WE ARE GOING TO LEARN ALL ABOUT FRACTIONS.
2
WHAT ARE FRACTIONS?
Whenever we want to denote our favourable part or the part which has to be highlighted with respect to the total number of parts, we make use of fractions.
For Example: I have a pizza with me and I cut it into 4 pieces and then have 1 of them so I would say that I have eaten one fourth of the pizza.
And three fourth of pizza is left. This means that I have consumed one part of the pizza out of the four parts which I had and three parts are still left.
3
PARTS OF FRACTION
The part which has to be highlighted is known as the numerator and the total number of parts are taken in the denominator.
For Example: 4/7
here 4 is the numerator and 7 is the denominator i.e. I have a total of seven parts and I have consumed/used four of them.
In 1/4 , 1 is the numerator whereas 4 is the denominator.

TYPES OF FRACTIONS
(1.) LIKE FRACTIONS: The fractions with the same denominator are known as like fractions. For example: 2/5, 4/5, 1/5, 3/5 and so on
(2.) UNLIKE FRACTIONS: The fractions with different denominator are known as unlike fractions. For example: 3/7, 5/8, 3/5 and so on
10
ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF LIKE FRACTIONS
We know that like fractions are those which have the same denominators.
To add like fractions we simply add the numerator and the denominator remains the same. The same rule applies for subtraction too.
Let's have a look at the examples to make this more clear.
1. 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4 2. 3/8 + 1/8 = 4/8
3. 6/8 - 4/8 = 2/8 4. 4/5 - 1/5 =3/5
NOW SOLVE THE QUESTIONS GIVEN AHEAD IN THIS LESSON TO GRAB THIS CONCEPT.

EXAMPLES OF EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS.
1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6 = 4/8 = 5/10 AND SO ON.........
1/3 = 2/6 = 3/9 = 4/12 = 5/15 AND SO ON........
NOW IT'S YOUR TIME TO TELL MORE EXAMPLES.
15
MIXED FRACTIONS
These fractions contain a whole number part and a fractional part.
Example: 1 1/4 we read them as one; one by four
By this we mean to say that 1 whole+ one fourth of the total
Suppose Aanya ate 2 pizzas and a half pizza
We will say it as 2-1/2
This is an example of MIXED FRACTION.
