Lesson Objectives

Students should be able to:

  1. Define the following: solvent, solute and solution

  2. Identify different types of solutions

  3. Define a suspension and a colloid

  4. Identify differences between solution, a suspension and a colloid

  5. Give examples of solutions, suspensions and colloids

7

What is a Solution?

A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances, one of which is usually a liquid.

The major component of solution is known as the solvent and the minor component is known as the solute

  • The substance which does the dissolving is the solvent

  • The substance being dissolved is the solute

8

What are the types of solution?

media

9

Saturated solutions

A saturated solution is one in which the solvent cannot dissolve any more solute at a particular temperature in the presence of a undissolved solute

media

10

Aqueous solutions

Solutions in which the solvent is water are known aqueous solutions

Multiple Choice

The substance being dissolved is called the ________

1

solvent

2

solid

3

14

Multiple Choice

When a certain amount of solvent cannot hold any more solute it is called a ________ solution.
1
Diluted
2
Saturated

15

Multiple Choice

A supersaturated solution is one that....
1
contains the maximum amount of dissolved solute.
2
contains less solute than a saturated solution.
3
contains more solute than a saturated solution.
4
is the amount of a substance required to form a saturated solution.

16

What is a suspension?

A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture in which minute, visible particles of one substance are dispersed in another substance, which is usually a liquid.

17

What is a colloid?

A colloid is a heterogeneous mixture of differently sized particles. They do not separate into layers when left to rest.

They are an intermediate between a solutions and a suspension
