• ​is any type of computing hardware that is used for storing, porting or extracting data files and objects.

Two Types of Storage Devices​

​

​Primary Storage Device

• ​Smaller in size

• ​designed to hold data temporarily

• ​internal to the computer.

• ​Fastest data access speed.

Primary Storage Device/s​

​

​Random Access Memory (RAM)

• ​The main memory/primary.

• ​The system memory.

• ​It allows information to be stored and retrieved.

• ​Volatile memory - meaning, to store information, it requires power to keep data accessible, if the computer is turned off, data contained in the RAM is lost.

​Secondary Storage Device

• ​removable, internal and external.

• ​has large storage capacity.

• ​stores data permanently

• ​There are three (3) types of secondary storage device:

  • ​The Magnetic Type

  • ​The Optical Type

  • ​The Flash Type

​Magnetic Type

Most common types of storage used with computers. Uses magnetic storage to record and retrieve digital information to and from one or more fast-spinning disks.

Optical Type

Flash Type

It uses lasers and lights as its method of reading and writing data.

It replaces most magnetic and optical media as it becomes cheaper because it is the more efficient and reliable solution.

​Hard Disk Drive (HDD) - Magnetic Type

• ​Also known as Hard Drive.

• ​Also known as HDD.

• ​Install inside a computer/laptop.

• ​It stores files for the Operating System.

• ​It stores files for software programs.

• ​It stores different file types like images, text, videos etc.

• ​It uses magnetic storage to store files.

Floppy Disk Drive (FDD) - Magnetic Type

• ​Also known as Diskette.

• ​Also known as Floppy.

• ​Also uses magnetic storage technology to store information.

CD-ROM disc - Optical Type

• ​Also known as compact disc.

• ​a form of optical storage.

• ​it employs lasers and lights to read and write data.

• ​mainly used for music audio.

• ​it is also used for data storage.

• ​it was followed by CD-R (writable) and CD-RW (re-writable)

• ​700 MB capacity.

DVD - Optical Type

• ​Also known as digital versatile disc and Blu-ray disc.

• ​superseded compact discs.

• ​it has much greater storage capacity

• ​8.5 GB storage capacity for the regular DVD.

• ​25 to 50GB for Blu-ray.

• ​can store high quality movies and large size software.

USB Flash Drive - Flash Memory Type

• Also known as Jump Drive or Thumb Drive.

• ​A small and ultra portable storage device.

• ​Connected via built-in USB port in the computer.

Secure Digital (SD) Card - Flash Memory Type

• A tiny flash memory card.

• ​High capacity memory.

• ​can be used for car navigation systems, cellular phones, e-books, smartphones, digital cameras, and personal computers.
