​Starter: Temperatures.

• ​ Resources: A displayed number line representing a thermometer with temperatures −5 to + 25 (or to suit your climate), one whiteboard for each pair of learners.

• Description: Choose a learner to say a temperature then say how the temperature rises and falls; for example, the learner might say, ‘The temperature starts at 8 degrees ...’ and you can then say, ‘... it falls by 3 degrees.’ The learners discuss, write the new

  temperature on their whiteboards and show their answers. Give a new instruction and continue until you have given five changes.

​MAIN ACTIVITY.

• Resources: Resource sheet 5D (one each).

  Description: Ensure that learners can read the temperatures from the graph on the resource sheet. Ask them to work in pairs to find the answers to questions 1–4 and then work on their own to make up some similar questions for their partner to answer.

​MAIN ACTIVITY.

Differentiation ideas:

Make sure that less confident learners can read the graph correctly by asking questions such as:

​Which city is the coldest? What is the temperature?

Which city is the warmest? What is the temperature?

Challenge more confident learners to do the extension questions 5 and 6 on the resource sheet and then research information on extreme temperatures.
