Radiation

2

Objectives:

By the end of the session students will be able to:

1. Describe the process of Radiation

2.Explain how heat is transferred via radiation.

3

Radiation

- Does not require a material through which heat energy is transferred.

- Heat is transferred through empty space (vacuum)

What is empty space?

- A space containing nothing at all.

  • Heat radiation consists of electromagnetic waves

4

  • The hotter an object the more radiation it gives off

  • Objects absorb radiation from things around them

  • If an object absorbs more radiation than it gives off it warms up.

  • If an object radiates more heat than it absorbs, it cools down.

5

the amount of heat radiated or absorbed by something depends on the color and type of its surface.

- Objects with dark dull surfaces absrob heat energy more readily than white and shiny surfaces which reflect it away.

eg. black --absorbs

      White --- Reflects
