ECOSYSTEM: Introduction to Photosynthesis
2
MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY
Differentiate basic features and importance of photosynthesis and respiration
3
YOUR TARGETS
Identify the reactants and products of photosynthesis;
Write the overall photosynthetic equation in symbols and words; and
Value the role of photosynthetic reaction in plants to other life processes.
4
Getting to know PHOTOSYNTHESIS is understanding how life exists on earth! Do you want to know more about it? I am sure you can hug a tree, smile or even talk to plants once you realize the process and perform the activities prepared for you in this module.
5
BEGIN!
All cells need energy to live. All organisms are either heterotrophs or autotrophs. Hetero means others troph means food. Heterotrophs must consume food for energy. Auto means self troph means food. Autotrophs can make their own food.
The process of food making is called PHOTOSYNTHESIS.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS
45
Plants, algae and cyanobacteria are the only organisms capable of performing photosynthesis.
They used light to make their own food, they are called PHOTOAUTOTROPHS (self-feeders using light)
46
Other organisms, such as animals, fungi, and other bacteria are called HETEROTROPHS (other feeders). They get their food produced by autotrophs for their energy needs.
Another group of bacteria called CHEMOAUTOTROPHS (chemo-feeders), use sugar not light energy in extracting energy from inorganic compounds.
47
PHOTOSYNTHESIS is a process where autotrophs undergo to convert the light energy from the sun into chemical energy.
The chemical energy is a molecule of sugar called GLUCOSE. Plants and other organisms use this for food.

The overall process of photosynthesis in a chemical equatation in SYMBOLS:

50
The REACTANTS go into a chemical process. They react during photosynthesis to make something new.
Water, carbon dioxide and the action of the light energy and chlorophyll are considered as photosynthetic enzymes.
51
The PRODUCTS that come out of after the chemical process are glucose and oxygen.
Photosynthesis uses radiant energy, carbon dioxide, and water to produce energy storing carbohydrates.
STOMATA controls the entry and exit of ga and water that plant needs.
OXYGEN is produced as a waste product of photosynthesis.

GIVEN WORDS ( LEAVES, CHLOROPHYLL,SUNLIGHT, WATER, ROOTS, FOOD, SUGAR, OXYGEN)
HINT: Why do plants perform photosynthesis? What type of energy goes into a plant during photosynthesis? What do plants need? What do plants produced?
74
Plants perform photosynthesis for other organism to obtain energy from food. Leaves have chlorophyll to capture sunlight. Plants need water and carbon dioxide to produce sugar and oxygen.
75
Congratulations on finishing the module! You have just had an amazing learning journey and for sure, you will have the same in the succeeding modules.
