2

What we can do with the verb IR?

We can say that we are GOING somewhere.

OR

We can say that we are GOING to do something.

3

What we can do with the verb IR?

Examples

I am going to the store

I am going to study

We can say that we are GOING somewhere.

OR

We can say that we are GOING to do something.

4

First, let's talk about going somewhere

You will use the conjugated form of IR + a + the place.

For example:

I am going to the store.

Voy a la tienda.

5

First, let's talk about going somewhere

You just have to remember to choose the right "person" for your conjugation.

She is going to the store - Ella va a la tienda.

We are going to the store - Nosotros vamos a la tienda.

6

Wait... how do we conjugate IR again?

media

7

One more thing...

If you are going to a "masculine" place then the "a" will combine with the "el". For example, it's not "Voy a el restaurante". It's "Voy al restaurante".

a + el = al

She is going to the restaurant - Ella va al restaurante.

We are going to the restaurant - Nosotros vamos al restaurante.

Note: Nothing like this happens to other articles like la, un, una, etc.

Hopefully, you could find 2, but noticed that only 1 of them is conjugated. The other is an infinitive.

I am going to study this afternoon.

  • Going is conjugated

  • To study is an infinitive

media

18

What's an infinitive again?

An infinitive is an UNCONJUGATED verb.

In Spanish, all infinitives can be identified by looking for a word ending in -AR, ER, or IR:

  • -AR (estudiar, necesitar, hablar)

  • -ER (comer, tener, ser)

  • -IR (ir, escribir)

19

Infinitive verb phrase- Going to + infinitive

In Spanish, we use conjugated "IR" + "a" + infinitive to indicate that we are going to do something. For example:

  • Voy a estudiar - I'm going to study

  • Vas a comer - You are going to eat

  • Va a hablar - He is going to talk

  • Vamos a pagar - We are going to pay

  • Vais a mirar - Y'all are going to look

  • Van a comprar - They are going to buy
