Second Conditional

media

36

When do we use it?

  • To talk about events in the present and future that are unlikely to happen;

  • For example: win the lottery, go to the moon...

37

A second conditional sentence consists of two clauses: if-clause and main clause.

  • If I had 300 dollars, I would buy a new laptop.

  • I would help that man if I had time.

38

Structure:

  • If + subject + Past Simple... subject + would/could/might + base verb

  • 1st conditional: If it stops raining, I will go out.

  • 2nd conditional: If it stopped raining, I would go out.

39

I, he, she, it + to be

  • If I were you...,

  • I wish it were true that he loved me.

  • If he were still alive, his age would be 145.

Multiple Choice

Practice 5. Choose the correct answer.

Federico: You’re running a marathon in a few months, aren’t you, Ariel? What (1) will / would you do if you sprained your ankle?

Ariel: That’s a good question, Federico. I am very careful, so hopefully I won’t ever get a sprained ankle. But if that (2) happened / happen, I would need to rest for a few days.

Federico: Could that (3) was / be a problem for your training if you had to stop for a while?

Ariel: Well, not really. There are three months to go before the marathon! But this kind of thing happens to athletes. I mean, what would Messi do if he (4) breaks / broke his leg playing soccer?

Federico: I think that he might (5) have / has to stop playing for months if he got hurt like that!

Ariel: But he still has a lot of money, so that wouldn’t be a big problem for him!

Federico: Ha, yes! We (6) will / would have to win the lottery if we wanted to be as rich as him!
