Imagine you are bowling and a bowling ball gets stuck in the gutter. To get it out, you can roll another bowling ball to hit the one that is stuck. The ball that is stuck has potential energy, and the ball that you roll has kinetic energy. When the moving ball hits the ball that is stuck, it transfers some of its kinetic energy to it and gets it moving. The ball that was moving then slows down or stops because it has transferred its energy.
