Coordinating conjunctions connect words, phrases, or clauses that are grammatically equal. In other words, the conjunction can join several nouns or several phrases or several clauses.

It connects two or more ideas or shows additional information.
EXAMPLES:
1. I like mango. I like banana ⮚ I like mango and banana
2. Liza has her printing shop. She also sells T-shirts. ⮚ Liza has her printing shop and she also sells T-shirts.
3. Robert’s dad was born in Laguna. His mom was born in Batangas. ⮚ Robert’s dad was born in Laguna, and his mom was born in Batangas.

N = nor
It suggests a negative idea and joins two negative ideas.
EXAMPLES:
1. They don’t go the church. They don’t go to the mall. ⮚ They don’t go to the church, nor do they go to the mall.
2. He is not lazy. He is not weak. ⮚ He is not lazy, nor is he weak.
3. Gary doesn’t like to drink coffee. He doesn’t like to drink milk. ⮚ Gary doesn’t like to drink coffee, nor does he like to drink milk.

It shows contrast or exception.
EXAMPLES:
1. The cake is delicious. It is very expensive. ⮚ The cake is delicious, but very expensive.
2. Nikki doesn’t like to wash the dishes. She does it anyway. ⮚ Nikki doesn’t like to wash the dishes, but she does it anyway.
3. He always practiced hard. He did not get the award

It expresses a strong contrast.

3. Her mom doesn’t like her friends. She is kind to them. ⮚ Her mom doesn’t like her friends, yet she is kind to them.

It shows result or consequence.
EXAMPLES:
1. I got sick. I went home to rest. ⮚ I got sick, so I went home to rest.
2. Mary watched TV all night. She got up late. ⮚ Mary watched TV all night, so she got up late.
3. She danced gracefully. She got all the attention in the program. ⮚ She danced gracefully, so she got all the attention in the program.
