Evaporation

The process by which water evaporates due to heat from the Sun and becomes water vapor that floats in the atmosphere.

Liquid water to Gaseous water (water vapor)

The process of evaporation that happens in plants is called transpiration.

10

  • It's when water moves from plant roots to Stem then to leaves and then finally goes out to the atmosphere through the pores of the leaves that are called stomata.

TRANSPIRATION

11

media

Condensation

It is the transition of water vapor back to its liquid state.

Water vapor that rises after evaporation to the atmosphere cools down and turns into liquid again. When it combines with dust particles, this results in the formation of clouds.

12

Precipitation

It’s when the water in the clouds gets too heavy; the water falls back to the earth’s surface either as rain, hail, snow or sleet.

  Other Components of water cycle:

Runoffs:

When water that falls from the sky doesn’t get absorbed by the ground but instead flows over the surface and collects in a water body like rivers, lakes, oceans, etc…

Runoffs are responsible for: Soil erosion,Transporting many man-made toxins and wastes which contributes more and more to the pollution.

media

16

Permeability:

● This is the ability of a fluid to flow through porous materials.

● Material like rocks have no pores -> low permeability

● Material like soil has many pores -> high permeability.

media

17

Infiltration:

The process by which water soaks into a material and it is affected by many factors:

Kind of area : Agricultural or urban

Kind of soil: Churned up or compacted.

Kind of Vegetation land: dense or sparse.

20

Kind of rain:  Gentle rain can be absorbed easily regardless where it falls, whereas Heavy rain needs more time to be absorbed under these conditions.

Kind of slope:

Landscape slope plays a very important role in affecting whether water can be absorbed by its surface. Gentle slopes allow more infiltration.

Write down 3 Secret/facts that you know about Oceans.

Let’s Get to the Bottom of This (Ocean Floor)

25

media

Oceans counts for 97% of the total water coverage on earth.

which represent the salty portion of water on earth.

26

Ocean floors can be studied using hard suits, submersible or sonars, etc…

The bottom of the ocean is called the ocean floor. Just like the land above the surface, the

ocean floor has mountains, volcanoes, deep trenches, plants and animals.

27

media

OCEAN FLOOR

28

The ocean floor is called the abyssal plain. Below the ocean floor, there are a few small

deeper areas called ocean trenches.

Features rising up from the ocean floor include seamounts, volcanic islands and the mid-oceanic ridges and rises.

Explain how atmosphere and geosphere interact, using a real-life example

Objective 2

31

Open Ended

Write any example of Atmosphere and Geosphere interaction

32

The Geosphere interacts with the Atmosphere in various ways.

For example;

The Sun's radiation is what keeps the Earth's interior hot and molten. Volcanic eruptions can cause a change in weather.

media

33

When the wind blows and helps to cause wind erosion, this is one example.

Tall mountain ranges also interact with the atmosphere by causing uplift on the windward side of the range, usually producing heavier rains on that side and a rain shadow on the leeward side.

CARBON CYCLE

36

Lets watch an video about carbon cycle

https://youtu.be/p3R-dB9K4ss

37

media

38

It’s how carbon gets recycled between different systems on Earth.

What is carbon cycle?

media

39

It involves the interaction between the biosphere, atmosphere and geosphere.

It starts with humans and animals inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide by a process called respiration.

media

40

Plants take in some of this carbon dioxide to use it in photosynthesis (food production in Plants) and release oxygen.

media

41

Decomposers on the other hand break down the dead bodies and thus release the carbon dioxide.

media

42

▪ Some of this carbon goes to the atmosphere and the remaining turns into fossil fuels.

After millions of years, these fossil fuels will then be used by industries which will burn them and thus release CO2 back to the air and thus contribute as well with respiration to the greenhouse effect.
