Characteristics of matter

by Djessina Bautista

2

Objectives

1.       Classify materials based on these properties: absorb water, float or sink, decaying or non-decaying.

2.       Identify the effects of decaying materials on one’s health and safety

3.       Demonstrate proper disposal of waste according to the properties of materials

4.       Relate the lesson to the bible verse “The Sheep and the Goats” so as to be an Assumptionist who is biasa, maganaca, and mayap

What is Matter?

4

  • Matter is everywhere

  • Made up of tiny particles called atom

  • Anything that occupies space and has mass

  • Exists in different forms: solid, liquid, and gas

  • Classified into two basic groups based on its properties: physical and chemical

How does if feel when things are grouped properly at home?

6

7

Matter has different physical and chemical properties and these properties determine how it is classified, changed, and used.

  1. what kind of materials floated on water? sink in water?

  2. Why did these materials float or sink in water?

  3. Some materials did not sink right away. Why do you think so?

  4. What are these materials made of?

15

  • Mass is the amount of matter in an object

  • volume is the space occupied by the object

  • Solid, liquid, gas

  • Some solids were made from different kind like metal, rubber, wood, paraffin, plastics, paper and cotton

16

DENSITY

Density is the mass of an object per unit volume.

density =mass/ volume

g/cm3, kg/m3

Materials that are less dense will float over materials that are denser. The floating or sinking of object in a liquid depends on the density of both the object and the liquid where the object is placed.

Absorbent or Non-absorbent

Absorbent- easily absorb water (porous)

Non-absorbent- does not absorb liquid

Bond paper vs newspaper

Capillarity is the ability of liquid to pass through narrow spaces without the assistance of an external force like gravity

Porosity is the ability of materials to absorb or hold liquid

Smooth or Rough

Texture is the roughness or smoothness of materials

Sense of touch (skin)

The feel and appearance of materials can tell you if they are rough or smooth.

Biodegradables and Nonbiodegradables

Decaying means changes in materials brought about by the presence of air and water in the environment and other microorganisms.

Decaying- biodegradable- comes from everything that has life

Non-decaying- Nonbiodegradable

37

Effects of Decaying Materials on One's Health

Decaying materials can be referred to as garbage

Garbage means wasted or spoiled that can be a breeding ground of microorganisms that can cause decay.

Thses microorganisms are made up mainly of bacteria and fungi.

38

Effects of Decaying Materials on One's Health

  • can cause diseases to people and pets

  • produce very bad odor to which the body could be sensitive to
