2
So far you have learned...
3
But how does matter (glucose) made from plants become part of a living thing. How does it become a part of living tissue.
First, you need to understand what living tissue is made out of.
4
LIVING THINGS ARE MADE OF 4 ORGANIC (Carbon-based) MOLECULES
5
All living things are mostly made of ORGANIC matter: Molecules that contain a CARBON atom.
In addition, they also need matter (vitamins & minerals) to be healthy.
6
There are four main organic molecules: Carbohydrates (SUGARS), Proteins (several functions), Nucleic acids (DNA: BLUEPRINTS/instructions), and Lipids (FATS)
All organisms need matter for GROWTH and maintenance.
7
Now each person per table will read about ONE organic molecule and fill out the corresponding section of the table in your notes.
-ONLY do your YOUR molecule/section
1-> Carbohydrates 2-> Proteins 3-> Lipids
4-> Nucleic Acids (10-15 minutes)
8
Now you will share your answers out loud to the rest of your table
Many of you are still not working as a team.
Maybe you don't know, maybe you are shy, IDK
What I do know is I will make you practice from now on 😁
We will start with Team member A. Everyone else be ready to listen and write things down.
9
How do living things get the materials (ORGANIC molecules) they need?
Autotrophs can use CARBON from their environment to make their own organic molecules: GLUCOSE (sugar). After, they can use glucose to make the other three ORGANIC molecules they need. They absorb other matter (VITAMINS & minerals) from the SOIL.
10
Organisms that cannot make their own organic molecules (HETEROTROPHS) get their organic matter & matter by consuming other living things. This is known as a FOOD chain.
DECOMPOSERS help recycle matter and organic matter back into the SOIL as nutrients that plants can use. This is why the flow of matter is considered a CYCLE.
