Characteristics and Properties of Waves Review
by Brandy Lloyd
2
Waves
Waves transport energy from place to place, not matter. Remember that matter is made of particles too small to be seen.
Waves are created from a source or force, that make a vibrations. Vibrations are the back and forth movement of matter.
Vibrations can be created from playing the drums, throwing a pebble in a pool, and riding in the car with the bass up.

Multiple Choice
What is the back and forth movement of matter?
energy
mass
vibrations
volume
5
Wave Parts
Crest - the top of the wave
Trough - the bottom of the wave
Wavelength - The wavelength can be measured between any two adjacent points of a wave, from crest to crest or trough to trough.
Amplitude - The amplitude can be measured between any wave crest and the origin line (midpoint).
6
Multiple Choice
What does letter B represent in the diagram?
crest/peak

7
Multiple Choice
What does letter D represent in the diagram?

10
Multiple Choice
What is the distance between two consecutive points in a phase on a wave called?
amplitude
crest
trough
wavelength
11
Frequency
The frequency can be found by counting the complete waves in a cycle.
Frequency is on way to define how fast a way moves.
When a wave has a higher frequency the wavelength is shorter.
When a wave has a low frequency the wavelength is longer.
So as a waves wavelength decreases the frequency increases and vice versa.
12
Multiple Choice
What would happen to the frequency of a wave if the wavelength increases.
The frequency does not change.
The frequency will decrease.
The frequency will increase.
The frequency changes into amplitude.
13
Two Types of Waves
14
Open Ended
Provide a brief description of how longitudinal and transverse waves are different.
15
Multiple Choice
Which type of wave is shown here?
Transverse Wave
Longitudinal Wave
Light Wave
Electromagnetic Wave
16
Multiple Choice
Which type of wave is shown here?
Transverse Wave
Longitudinal Wave
Light Wave
Electromagnetic Wave
17
Sound Waves
Sound waves travel through matter as a Compression (longitudinal) Wave.
They cannot exist in empty space.
A source or force causes a vibration.
Sound waves can travel the fastest through the tightly packed state of matter(Solids).
18
Light Waves
Light waves travel through matter as a transverse wave.
Similar to how ocean waves move.
These waves can move through empty space, called a vacuum.
Light waves move at the speed of Light, or a thousand times faster than sound waves.
19
Multiple Choice
Which statement best explains why thunder is heard after lightning is seen?
Thunder is produced but the impact of lighting against the ground.
Light travels slower than sound.
Light travels faster than sound.
The eye works faster than the ear.
20
Multiple Choice
Both sound and light energy travel in…
bent lines
parallel lines
curved lines
waves
21
Poll
How do you feel about everything you have learned in this module?
I got it. I could teach it to someone else.
I understand most of it.
I know some things, but I still need help.
OH NO! Help ME!
22
Seismic Waves
Earthquakes cause seismic waves.
Scientists use seismic waves to measure how big an earthquake is.
They move quickly at 20 times the speed of sound.
Travel through matter as transverse and longitudinal waves.
P-Waves (primary) are longitudinal.
S-Waves (secondary) are transverse.
Seismic waves make body waves (travel through the interior of earth) and surface waves (travel on the surface of earth).
23
Multiple Choice
Sounds waves, light waves, and water waves are all alike because ________.
They all move energy from one place to another.
They all move at the same speed.
They all move the fastest in water.
They all move without vibrating.
24
Multiple Choice
Seismic waves are produced by _______.
hurricanes
earthquakes
blizzards
volcanoes
25
Multiple Choice

They all move the fastest in water.
They all move without vibrating.
They all move energy from one place to another.
They all move at the same speed.
