​Gerund or Present Particple

​The problem of identifying whether it is a Gerund or a Present Participle is one of many problems that many people do not understand because both the Gerund and the Present Participle are verbs in Ving form. Being a Gerund or Present Participle is difficult.

​Gerund

Gerund is formed by adding a verb to ing, such as eat --> eating, play--> playing, swim--> swimming. All gerund words do not function as verbs, but instead act as 'nouns'

​Gerund เกิดจากการนำกริยามาเติม ing เช่นeat --> eating, play--> playing, swim--> swimming โดยคำที่เป็น gerund ทั้งหมดนั้นจะไม่ทำหน้าที่เป็นกริยา แต่จะทำหน้าเป็น 'คำนาม'

​For example :

Swimming is fun.(การว่ายน้ำเป็นเรื่องสนุก) 

She likes eating steak. (เธอชอบการกินเต็ก)

There are four functions of Gerund in a sentence:

หน้าที่ของ Gerund ในประโยคจะมีทั้งหมด 4 อย่างด้วยกัน​

1. As the subject of the sentence

e.g. Swimming is fun​

1.เป็นประธานของประโยค

เช่น Swimming is fun​

2. The object of the transitive verb

e.g. She likes eating steak.​

​2.เป็นกรรมของกริยา

 เช่น She likes eating steak.

​3. The object  of the preposition

e.g. I will call you after arriving at the office.

​3.เป็นกรรมของบุพบท

เช่น I will call you after arriving at the office

4. As a subject complement 

such as Seeing is believing​

เช่น Seeing is believing​

​Present Participle

​for the Present Participle is the same as Gerund in that it arises from the addition of Verb to ing, but is different from Gerund in that the Present Participle acts as an ADJECTIVE whereas Gerund acts as a Noun,

​สำหรับ Present Participle นั้นเหมือนกันกับ Gerund ตรงที่เกิดจากการนำ Verb มาเติม ing เพียงแต่ว่าจะแตกต่างจาก Gerund ตรงที่ Present Participle ทำหน้าเป็น ADJECTIVE ส่วน Gerund ทำหน้าที่เป็น Noun

A working worker is crying. (working ขยาย woman)

or

She is waiting for the man standing on the bus. (standing ขยาย man)

​*Present Participle can be a Verb if it is preceded with a Verb to be (is,am,are)

​*Present Participle สามารถเ็ป็น Verb แท้ได้ในกรณีที่มี Verb to be นำหน้า เช่น

e.g.She is playing means she is playing, not she is play

​She is playing แปลว่า เธอกำลังเล่น ไม่ใช่ เธอเป็นเล่น

​A woman is working means a woman is working.

​A woman is working แปลว่ ผู้หญิงคนหนึ่งกำลังทำงาน 

​

​ If so, it becomes the a formual for Progressive Tense

​ซึ่งถ้าเป็นเช่นนี้ก็จะกลายเป็นสูตรของ Progressive Tense ไปนั่นเอง

​Now, let's talk about the position of the Present Participle:

​ทีนี้มาพูดถึงตำแหน่งของ Present Participle กันบ้าง

1. In front of the noun,

such as a working worker (working worker)​
