Climate can be summarized this way: climate is what you expect, weather is what you get.

3

What affects Climate?

  • The latitude of a location: Closer to the equator= warmer climate

  • Large bodies of water like oceans and lakes: Weather is more constant throughout the year

  • Mountains and Elevation - climate can change dramatically

4

Latitude

  • Locations near the equator get more sunlight than areas farther from the equator.

  • This is caused by Earth’s curved surface.

  • The equator gets direct sunlight, while other locations it is more spread out.

Question image

The arrow above the water is coming down and is blue because

1

the water is warm so it warms the air and warm air sinks.

2

the water is cold so it warms the air and cool air sinks.

3

the water is cold so it cools the air and cool air sinks.

4

the water is warm so it warms the air and cool air sinks.

11

Multiple Choice

What is a rain shadow?

1

A patch of land that has become a desert due to blocked rainfall

2

A type of cloud that forms on the leeward side of a mountain

A region with heavy rainfall caused by mountain ranges

4

A phenomenon where rain falls only during the night

12

Multiple Choice

What causes the formation of a rain shadow?

1

Warm and cool air masses colliding

2

The rotation of the Earth on its tilted axis

3

The expansion and cooling of air as it moves to higher elevation

4

The movement of warm or cold air

II. The polar climate zone

  • characterized by year-round winter-like conditions.

  • Summers in some parts of the polar climate zone may see cool temperatures, rather than freezing winter temperatures.
