Science - CLIMATE ZONES
TODAY’S TARGET: Recognize the three elementary climate zones as tropical, temperate, and polar. Recognize that Florida lies between the tropical and temperate climate zones.
2
Climate can be summarized this way: climate is what you expect, weather is what you get.
3
What affects Climate?
The latitude of a location: Closer to the equator= warmer climate
Large bodies of water like oceans and lakes: Weather is more constant throughout the year
Mountains and Elevation - climate can change dramatically
4
Latitude
Locations near the equator get more sunlight than areas farther from the equator.
This is caused by Earth’s curved surface.
The equator gets direct sunlight, while other locations it is more spread out.
5
Proximity to WATER
6
Mountains and Elevation
7
Multiple Select
What is latitude?
The location of a point to east or west from the Equator.
The location of a point to north or south from the Equator.
The location of a point to north or south from the Prime Meridian.
The location of a point to east or west from the Prime Meridian.
8
Multiple Choice
As we move from the Equator, the temperature is..
Warmer
Colder
Temperate
All are correct
9
Multiple Choice
10
Multiple Choice
The arrow above the water is coming down and is blue because
the water is warm so it warms the air and warm air sinks.
the water is cold so it warms the air and cool air sinks.
the water is cold so it cools the air and cool air sinks.
the water is warm so it warms the air and cool air sinks.
11
Multiple Choice
What is a rain shadow?
A patch of land that has become a desert due to blocked rainfall
A type of cloud that forms on the leeward side of a mountain
A region with heavy rainfall caused by mountain ranges
A phenomenon where rain falls only during the night
12
Multiple Choice
What causes the formation of a rain shadow?
Warm and cool air masses colliding
The rotation of the Earth on its tilted axis
The expansion and cooling of air as it moves to higher elevation
The movement of warm or cold air
13
I. There are three main climate zones
polar, temperate, and tropical.
Florida lies in between the temperate and tropical climate zone, and has characteristics of both.
14
Multiple Choice
Florida lies in between the ___________ and tropical climate zone
tropical
sub polar
temperate
polar
15
Multiple Choice
_________ is what is happening at a particular time and place
Climate
Weather
Tropical
Temperate
16
II. The polar climate zone
characterized by year-round winter-like conditions.
Summers in some parts of the polar climate zone may see cool temperatures, rather than freezing winter temperatures.
17
Multiple Choice
Polar regions are found
Near the equator
In the oceans
Near the poles
In areas of warmth
18
Multiple Choice
Polar regions sometimes experience darkness because of
There are no lights
The Earth's tilt
The sun goes away
19
III. The temperate climate zone
characterized by the regular four seasons of winter, spring, summer, and fall
20
Multiple Choice
21
Multiple Choice
Temperatures in the TEMPERATE ZONES are...
cold all year
always warm
warm in summer and cold in winter
22
IV. The tropical climate zone
characterized by year-round summer-like conditions.
close to the equator
23
Multiple Choice
Which of the following best describes the tropical rain forest?
hot and humid
cold and dry

24
Multiple Choice
This is where you can find tropical rain forests.
near the ocean
near the equator
in the northern hemisphere
25
Multiple Choice
The climate zone closest to the equator is:
temperate zone

26
Multiple Choice
Florida is located:
in the tropical climate zone
in the temperate climate zone
