​Acids usually taste sour, sharp or tangy, like a lemon. Be carefull some acids can be very dangerous. They can be corrosive, when dealing with a corrosive acid be mindful of the following symbol:

Many cleaning products are alkali. Like acids a strong alkali can be very dangerous. They can cause chemical burns​.

​An alkali is the opposite of an acid.

Some substances react with acids and alkali and produce different kind of colours. These are called indicators. Red cabbage, blackcurrant and beetroot make great indicators.

​The pH scale tells if a substance is an acid or an alkali. The scale goes from 0 to 14, where all numbers smaller than 7 are acids. A substance with a pH of 7 is considered neutral. And any substance above a 7 an alkali.
