1
Latitude and Proximity to Water
TODAY’S TARGET: Recognize characteristics (temperature and precipitation) of different climate zones as they relate to latitude, elevation, and proximity to bodies of water.
2
Multiple Choice
Mountains can have snow and ice on top of them because
they are in the polar climate zone
they are low in latitude
they are near oceans
they are high in elevation
3
I. The equator is the imaginary line that runs around the center of the Earth like a belt.
TOP of Earth = NORTH POLE
BOTTOM of Earth = SOUTH POLE
The north and south poles of the Earth are the two points where the Earth spins on its axis.
4
Multiple Choice
The ____________ is the imaginary line that runs around the center of the Earth like a belt.
prime meridian
equator
tropic of capricorn
Polar region
5
Multiple Choice
The equator is______________ between the North Pole and the south pole
a real line
halfway
long
wet
6
Multiple Choice
The north and south poles of the Earth are the two points where the Earth _______________.
has the most precipitation
is warmest
spins on its axis
is split in half
7
II. Climate at the equator is hot year-round.
There are no seasonal changes at the equator.
Places in higher latitudes are cooler than places located near the equator.
8
North and south of the equator are the next lines that run around the Earth: the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
These two lines of latitude mark the rough boundary between the tropic climate zone and the temperate climate zone.
9
Multiple Choice
There are no ____________ at the equator.
people
seasonal changes
living things
pieces of land
10
Multiple Choice
Places in higher latitudes are _______ than places located near the equator.
worse
better
warmer
cooler
11
Multiple Choice
What are the two lines of latitude mark the rough boundary between the tropic climate zone and the temperate climate zone?
The Prime Meridian and the Equator
Tropic of Capricorn and the Equator
Equator and the Tropic of Cancer
Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn
12
Multiple Choice
The three main climate zones of the world are :
Polar Zone, Temperate Zone and Cold Zone.
Polar Zone,Temperate Zone and Tropical Zone.
Hot Zone,Temperate Zone and Tropical Zone.
Moderate Zone,Temperate Zone and Hot Zone.
13
Multiple Choice
Which climatic zone experiences the four seasons?
Tropical
Temperate
Polar
Torrid
14
III. proximity to water affects temperature and precipitation of an area’s climate
Places close to a large body of water (ocean or very large lake) tend to have less extreme temperatures (warmer winters and cooler summers)
Places located near water have higher humidity and precipitation
15
Notice in this section of the climate zone map that northern Canada, on the left, is shaded blue. These parts of northern Canada are in the polar zone. Across the Atlantic Ocean, to the east, England and most of Europe is in the temperate zone. Both locations are at the same latitude, or distance above the equator, but have different climate characteristics. Something is adding heat to Europe.
16
Multiple Choice
As you go from the Equator and move north, latitude...
increases
decreases
stays the same
17
Multiple Choice
Proximity means ______________.
water
closeness
climate
equator
18
Multiple Choice
Places close to a large body of water (ocean or very large lake) tend to have __________ extreme temperatures (warmer winters and cooler summers)
no
an equal amount
more
less
19
Multiple Choice
Places located near water have ________ humidity and precipitation
lower
higher
no
an equal amount of
20
Here's what's adding heat!
The Gulf Stream Current carries warm water from the Gulf of Mexico across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe. The heat carried across the Atlantic is released into the air near Europe and is what causes Europe to be warmer than northern Canada. It is not unusual for people on the beach in England and Ireland to find coconuts and even mangrove seeds that have fallen from trees in Florida and traveled on the Gulf Stream Current all the way across the ocean.
Because western Europe is close to water (proximity is being close to something), the climate of Europe is affected by the heat carried in the ocean water.
21
Multiple Choice
The Gulf Stream Current carries __________ from the Gulf of Mexico across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe
warm water
cold water
peopl
22
Multiple Choice
Because western Europe is ____________________, the climate of Europe is affected by the heat carried in the ocean water.
close to the equator
close to water
close to mountains
high in altitude
23
Multiple Choice
Locations in the same latitude can have _________ climates depending on proximity to water.
close
equal
different
wrong
