Some Basic Definitions of Religions Discussed

  • Christian: A religion that believes in one god, based on the life and teaching of Jesus of Nazareth.  It has many different sects, or branches, and has about 2.4 billion followers. 

Catholic: A Christian group that base their beliefs on the Christian Bible.They believe in Jesus.  They also believe that Mary, the mother of Jesus, is a very important holy person.  Catholics pray to Mary.  Their leader is the Pope.

  •  Protestant: A Christian group that base their beliefs on the Christian Bible.  All Protestants reject Roman Catholicism and the power of its leader, the pope. 

Judaism; Judaism teaches that there is only one God who created the world. God expressed what he expects of people in the Ten Commandments and other laws. Jews believe that God chose them to have a special relationship with him. They must devote themselves to God and love one another.
