Washington was born in Westmoreland, Virginia in 1732.
Washington fought for the British during the Seven Years War, where he learned tactics that he would later use to defeat the British in the Revolutionary War.
He would eventually become America's first president.
Fun fact: Washington stood a head and shoulder taller than all other founding fathers.

Henry was born in Hanover County, Virginia in 1736.
His speech helped motivate Virginians to join the Revolutionary cause.
He served as the first and sixth governor of Virginia.
Fun Fact: Henry led a raid on Williamsburg the day after Lexington and Concord.

He was the third president of the United States.
He was not only the main author of The Declaration but also the author of The Virginia Statute of Religious Freedom.

The Marquis de Lafayette
Lafayette was born in France in 1757.
He became a commissioned officer in the French army at the age of 13.
Lafayette's first involvement in battle was the Battle of Brandywine where he was wounded. He kept his composure and led the patriot's retreat. This caught the eye of Washington. He commended him and recommended him to Congress for command of a division.
Because of Lafayette, the French supplied aid to the Americans during the Revolutionary War.

James Armistead Lafayette
James was born into slavery in the mid-1700s in New Kent County, Virginia.
He joined the British army but in reality, he was a spy for the patriots.
He gave information to Lafayette and Washington about the British which allowed the Generals to form a blockade against Cornwallis's advancements.
Fun Fact: He added Lafayette to his name after he was granted his freedom in 1787.

Many Native American communities were torn over who to support during the war.
Most communities tried to avoid conflict.
(Not so) Fun Fact: At the end of the war, Native Americans as a whole were assumed to have fought with the British and treated very poorly. When the natives fought back, they had very little support from their British allies.

The British encouraged enslaved African Americans to run away to cripple the American people.
Once they crossed British lines, many never saw battle. They were often given manual labor jobs because of their skill set.
(Not so)Fun Fact: At Yorktown, the British became trapped. While trapped some of the enslaved people had become infected with smallpox. General Cornwallis sent all who were infected home with hopes of spreading the disease.

During the Revolution, wives of soldiers and Generals would tend to the domestic needs of Continental army camps. (cooking, sewing, medical help, etc.)
Fun Fact: A woman by the name of Deborah Sampson wanted to do her part in the war. So, she disguised herself as a man and fought in the Revolution beginning in 1781. She was wounded three times in 1782. Sampson's identity was revealed in 1783 after she contracted a fever. She has a statute in Sharon, Massachusetts honoring her war services.
