The Progressive Era brought many reform movements:

  • ​Child Labor Reform

​Industrialization brought women out of the house. They worked jobs outside of the home in large numbers. Ultimately allowing them to get together and enact change.

​Susan B. Anthony

  • Born in February ​15th, 1820 in Adams, Massachusetts.

  • ​Later moved to Rochester, NY

  • ​She was a champion of temperance, abolition, the rights of labor, equal pay for equal work, and equal suffrage.

  • ​Traveled around the country with Elizabeth Cady Stanton giving speeches in favor of women's suffrage.

Equal Rights Association

  • With Elizabeth Cady Stanton, co-founded the Equal Rights Association

  • ​Started a newspaper under the organization called the Revolution

    • ​Stanton and Anthony edited the paper

  • ​Anthony grew increasingly famous on her lecture circuit

    • ​Gained many supporters and opposition

​So what did she do?

  • She and her sisters went to a local Barber Shop and demanded to be registered to vote.

  • The plan was to be refused, so that the women could sue for damages and bring women's suffrage to the courts.

  • The wome​n were registered, and able to vote.

  • Anthony's actions were publicized in the newspaper

  • ​Three weeks later, a United States Marshall came to the Anthony family house at 17 Madison Street in Rochester. He had a warrant. The charge was knowingly wrongfully and unlawfully voting for a representative to the Congress of the United States.

  • ​Susan B. Anthony was arrested and brought to the police station on a trolley.

  • ​Anthony was later put on trial for her alleged crime

​The Trial

  • The judge presiding over the trial was ​Ward Hunt

    • ​He did not allow Anthony to testify

      • ​Claimed women were not competent enough to do so

      • ​Wrote his opinion before the arguments closed

      • ​Directed the jury of all men to find her guilty

  • ​When asked if Anthony had anything to say she stated,

    • ​"...you have trampled underfoot, every vital principle of our government, my natural rights, my civil rights, my political rights are all alike. Ignored, robbed of the fundamental privilege of citizenship".

  • ​Anthony was fined $100

    • ​She never paid the fine
