​Filtration

• This method is used to separate suspended solids from a liquid.

• ​the solid particles are large enough to be filtered out.

• ​the solid collected in the filter paper is called the residue.

​Distillation

​1. simple distillation: used to separate a solvent from its impurities.

​it is used to remove salt from water to obtain pure water.

​

​The pure liquid collected is called the distillate.

​Fractional distillation

​This method of separation is commonly used to separate mixture of liquid which have very close boiling points.

​example a mixture of ethanol and water.

​*ethanol boils at 78 degrees Celsius

​*water boils at 100 degrees Celsius
