Phonemes are the smallest parts of words that impact a words meaning. For example, changing the first phoneme in the word "bat" to /c/ would change the word to "cat". If a student is able to successfully do this, they have a sense of phonemic awareness.

Phonemes

When a student is able to manipulate the sounds, they are able to notice which words in a set of words begin with the same sound, isolating and saying the first or last sound in a word, combining, or blending the separate sounds in a word to say the word, or breaking, or segmenting a word into its separate sounds
