AR Verb Conjugation

2

Infinitives

Before we get to conjugation, we need to know what an infinitive is.

An infinitive is the simplest form of a verb.

Infinitives in Spanish end in -ar, -er, or -ir.

  • Hablar

  • Comer

  • Escribir

Infinitives in English always translate "to _____"

  • to speak

  • to eat

  • to write

Conjugation

Conjugation is when we change the infinitive to match the subject.

We do it all the time when speaking English without thinking.

  • I go to the store.

  • You go to the store.

  • She goes to the store.

  • We go to the store.

  • Y'all go to the store.

  • They go to the store.

*In English, many of the conjugations are the same. In this example, most conjugations are go, except for she. However, in Spanish, every form is different.

10

Conjugation in Spanish

In Spanish, conjugation works a little differently. We change the ending

(hablar, comer, or escribir) to match the subject.

METHOD

Start with the infinitive

  • Hablar (to speak)

Take off the ending

  • Habl__

Add the ending for the subject

  • Hablo (I speak)

Done! Simple as that.

Conjugated verbs can translate in several ways

Hablo español.

  • I speak Spanish.

  • I do speak Spanish.

  • I am speaking Spanish.

Pronouns might not be needed in the sentence if:

  • the conjugated verb tells you exactly who the subject is

    • For example, Hablo can only be for I, so we don't need Yo at the beginning

  • the subject is already known from context

    • If you were already talking about the person previously

17

Try it with other infinitive verbs

On your paper, write the

conjugations for the following
