Labeling Points by their coordinates
Always start by moving horizontally on the x-axis. This means going left or right.
Then we move vertically on the y-axis. This means going up or down.
X is before Y in the alphabet, so always right points as ( x , y )

(x,y)
Write your answer for the next slide Exactly like this!

6
Translating a single point
Start by writing the coordinates for point F.
To Translate is to "slide" a figure around a plane.
In this case we need to take point F and slide it 8 units to the right and 2 units down. What are the new coordinates?
7
(x,y)
Write your answer for the next slide Exactly like this!

9
Pre-image to Image
When we perform a transformation on a figure, we start with a pre-image and end with an image.
10
arrow notation
We have these transformation instructions. It is telling us that we need to slide our point 3 units to the left and 1 unit up.
Horizontally: -3
Vertically: 1

13
arrow notation
Now we are given a translation and we have to write down the rule it used to slide our point q.
how did q (our pre-image) transform into q' ( our image)?
Write it using arrow notation. Always start with the ordered pair ( x , y ) and then your arrow.
14
( x + 3 , y -1 )
Write your answer for the next slide Exactly like this!
15

Translating a figure
If we can translate a single point, then we can translate a figure. All we have to do is translate every point we see.
Do the same exact transformation for every point. Follow the rules given and move each point one by one. All points are moved using the same rules.
17
arrow notation with figures
Remember that x deals with left and right, and y deals with up and down.
Positive numbers represent going up or going right. Negative numbers represent going left or going down.
Uses the translation rules given to map your image from your pre- image.

Describe in your own words what the translation rule is
19
Writing translation rule
Use what we have learned to write the rule that describes the translation we see happening on our graph.
20
( x + 3 , y -1 )
Write your answer for the next slide Exactly like this!

Last Question
You need to give me the following:
Translate and graph your image
labels for all points
A table with all 8 coordinates
and the rule in arrow notation
Solve the maze and be prepared to give directions.
