The Steam Engine

The new machines needed power. Water power was not strong enough to run heavy machines. During the 1600s, inventors had begun experimenting with "fire engines" or steam engines. In 1698 Thomas Savery built the first commercial steam engine. Around 1712 Thomas Newcomen improved Savery's engine. It was, however, far from perfect. It used too much coal.

In 1769 a Scottish engineer named James Watt invented an improved steam engine. For several years only the textile industry made use of Watt's engine. By 1850, however, it was being used throughout Britain. Then it spread throughout Europe.

The invention of the steam engine completely changed transportation. In 1804 a British engineer, Richard Trevithick built the first steam locomotive. Steam locomotives came into general use in Britain in the late 1830s. By 1850, Great Britain had 6,600 miles of railroad track. The United State, France, and Germany built their own rail systems during the next 10 years.

An American, Robert Fulton, built the first successful river steamboat in 1807. Within a few years, steamboats were being used on British rivers. By the mid-1800s, steam-powered ships were carrying raw materials and finished goods across the ocean.

Electricity & Petroleum

In 1831 an Englishman named Michael Faraday invented a machine called the dynamo. It generated an electric current by using magnets. Faraday's discovery led to the building of more powerful electric generators and electric motors. In time the use of electricity as a source of power would become widespread.

In the 1850's Americans discovered that petroleum, or unrefined oil, could be used for many things. It could be used to make kerosene, and kerosen could be used for hea and light. Oil could make machinery run more smoothly. Fortunately, there was a good supply of crude oil available in the United States.

Oil was to become of the most valuable resources in the world. This would come about with the invention of the internal combustion engine and the diesel engine. Petroleum could be turned into gasoline and diesel fuel to run those engines. Oil would give some nations new wealth and power
