The salt magnesium sulfate forms soluble crystals.
Describe how a pure sample of these crystals can be prepared from insoluble magnesium oxide. [4]
27
Let's check!
1. Add excess magnesium oxide to sulfuric acid and stir the mixture.
2. Filter the resulting mixture to remove the unreacted magnesium oxide.
3. Collect the filtrate which is magnesium sulfate.
4. Heat the filtrate until it is saturated.
5. Leave the filtrate to cool so that magnesium sulfate crystals can form.
6. Filter to collect the crystals formed.
7. Wash the crystals with a little cold water to remove impurities.
8. Dry the crystals between a few sheets of filter paper.

Use the following information to suggest the steps needed to prepare by precipitation pure lead(II) sulfate, starting from powdered lead(II) oxide.
- lead(II) sulfate is insoluble in water
- lead (II) oxide is insoluble in water
- lead(II) nitrate is soluble in water
47
Let's check!
1. Add excess powdered lead(II) oxide to nitric acid.
2. Filter to remove excess unreacted lead(II) oxide.
3. The filtrate collected is lead(II) nitrate solution.
4. Add the lead(II) nitrate solution to excess sodium sulfate solution.
5. Filter the mixture to collect the residue lead(II) sulfate.
6. Wash the lead(II) sulfate with a little distilled water.
7. Allow the lead(II) sulfate to dry on a piece of filter paper.
