​What does it mean to annotate?

​Annotating means adding notes, thoughts, questions, or symbols by giving explanations, providing definitions, asking questions, or making connections in the text.

​Some tips when annotating

you can use mine or come up with your own

  • put a box around unfamiliar words

  • ​put a (*) on important or repeating ideas

  • ​Use a (?) question mark for passages you don't understand

  • ​Use an (!) point for ideas and passages that surprise you

  • ​write notes in the margins to record personal thoughts about the text or characters

  • ​Use arrows to connect ideas together

  • ​Write CD in passages were you notice character development

  • ​Write CI where you notice central ideas

  • ​Color!!!! Use different colors to help differentiate ideas
