4

At this point...

Your group likely have different notes, interview transcripts, archived materials, and survey results... (I hope)

This session helps you prepare for the "Results" and "Discussion" section of your presentation.

5

What is a 'Results Section'?

a research section that reports the finding of your research but does not interpret the meaning of data

The interpretation and explanation of the results should be written nin your discussion and conclusion section.

media

6

IMPORTANT

The results section should show what were discovered (raw data) while the discussion section should answer so what does this mean.

7

Analyzing QUANTITATIVE Results

*surveys, questionnaires, etc

Focus on quantifying variables and finding patterns in people's actions, behaviors, or thoughts:

  1. start with a short description of the data or sample (how many are in it and the type of population),

  2. descriptive statistics that report the central tendency (mean, median, mode) --- or make table or graphs that show the basics of your data.

8

Analyzing Qualitative Results

*observations, interviews, etc.

Make a synopsis of the results followed by an explanation each key findings:

- aggregate (summary) answer of your participants in three themes emerging from your interviews and use quotations from your participants

- showing each result and explaining each one

It is important to highlight common themes or recurring themes in your results.

9

Take note of this..

- When you already have your results, the organisation of these results would be the focus in your study. Organize chunks of ideas into themes or main points.

  • In presenting qualitative data, you should give clear and rich descriptions or properly introduced quotations.

  • In presenting quantitative data, it is advisable to use tables that provide summary insights into what is written in your text.

10

Discussing your Findings

The final Step

11

What is a 'Discussion Section'?

the section that interprets and describes your findings in relation to what is already known about your topic (the things you have discussed in results section).

Goal: improve understanding of your audience through the evidence provided in the research.

12

Things to ask before doing this section

  • Do your results answer your research questions? What is your interpretation of the results?

  • Do your finding agree with what others have written before?

  • If it does, what does your research contribute?

  • If it does not, what alternative explanations could be given?

  • What can be concluded from the study? What are the main points?

Discussion section will challenge you to reason creatively, analytically, and critically about your research.

13

How to discuss your findings?

  1. Let your readers know your answer to the research question. Highlight these points briefly.

  2. Provide evidence through the results and comment which results were expected and which were not. Explain why they have come out that way.

  3. Let your readers know how your findings could be significant addition to the topic and how it can help study the topic for future studies.

14

Mini-research Preparation
